Course Calendar

The semester begins with a brief introduction to the course, followed by six topic modules focused on different, yet overlapping, aspects of life in Brazil. The topic modules sandwich our spring break, during which time students are required to read a short novel.

Topic 1 – History of Brazil (in two weeks)

Topic 2 – What is “Brazil” and Who Are the “Brazilians?”

Topic 3 – Ideas of Color, Race, and Racism in Brazil

Topic 4 – “Brazil is Like, Really Dangerous, Right?”

Topic 5 – “Brazil is Like, Exotic, Right?”

Topic 6 – Amazonia and Amerindian Anthropology
